SUMMER 1998

In the spring of "98" we removed the rear rock wall and dug the earth out creating a gentle slope upward. Then using Terra Cotta roofing tiles I reclaimed from a trash pile I created a waterfall that sloped up at the rear side. At the top I constructed a flowerbed also out of the tiles and then lined the top area with the rocks from the wall I had removed. I used an old swimming pool pump and filter that I retrofitted as a pond filter and buried the discharge hose under the rocks. This allowed the water to seem to appear from the rocks and flow down the tile water fall. Also visable in the picture are water lilies that I had placed in the pond in 1996 that I allowed to grow at the bottom of the pond rather than in the pots they had been in and out grew. Most of the plants I have today I simply leave in the pond and allow to grow on the bottom of the pond. The reed plants I finally removed from the pond as they simply became a nusance rather that an asset.

That koi in the picture is Big Momma our first koi we purchased back in 1993. In this photo I estimate she was around 23" long and weighed around 6 lbs. She was something to see as she seemed to be attending to her garden as she would rearrange the plants from one spot to another.
